What Is Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?

Medicare Supplement Insurance — commonly called “Medigap” — is private insurance that helps pay for costs that Original Medicare doesn’t fully cover, such as:

  • Deductibles (Part A and Part B)
  • Copayments and coinsurance
  • Excess charges (when doctors charge more than Medicare-approved amounts)
  • Foreign travel emergency care (some plans)

Important: Medigap is different from Medicare Advantage. With Medigap, you keep Original Medicare (Parts A & B) and add a supplement plan on top of it. With Medicare Advantage, you replace Original Medicare with a private plan.

How Medigap Works

  1. You keep Original Medicare — Medicare pays its share first
  2. Your Medigap plan pays some or all of the remaining costs — depending on which plan you choose
  3. You can see any doctor nationwide who accepts Medicare — no networks, no referrals
  4. You pay a monthly premium for your Medigap policy, in addition to your Part B premium

Medigap Plan Comparison

All Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government. Every Plan G from any company covers the exact same benefits. The only differences are price and customer service.

Who Should Consider Medigap?

Medigap may be right for you if:

  • ✅ You want the freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.
  • ✅ You travel frequently and want nationwide coverage without network restrictions
  • ✅ You prefer predictable monthly costs with minimal out-of-pocket surprises
  • ✅ You have ongoing health conditions that require frequent specialist visits
  • ✅ You want to avoid prior authorizations and referral requirements

Best Time to Enroll

Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Your best opportunity to buy a Medigap policy is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the 6-month window that starts the month you turn 65 AND are enrolled in Medicare Part B.

During this period:

  • Insurance companies cannot deny you coverage
  • They cannot charge you more due to health conditions
  • You have guaranteed issue rights

After this window: Companies can use medical underwriting — meaning they can deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on your health history.

⚠️ Don’t miss your window! Talk to Joel before your 65th birthday to plan ahead.
