What Is Medicare Advantage?
Medicare Advantage (also called Part C) is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. Instead of getting coverage directly from the federal government (Original Medicare), you enroll in a plan offered by a private insurance company that contracts with Medicare.
Key Facts:
- Medicare Advantage plans must cover everything Original Medicare covers (Part A & Part B)
- Most plans include additional benefits not available with Original Medicare
- Many plans have $0 monthly premiums (you still pay your Part B premium)
- Plans typically include prescription drug coverage (Part D) built in

How Medicare Advantage Works
The Basics
- You must have Medicare Part A and Part B to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan
- You choose a plan in your area that fits your needs (doctors, medications, budget)
- You receive all Medicare benefits through your plan, plus any extra benefits included
- Most plans use a network β HMO, PPO, or PFFS β of doctors and hospitals
Plan Types
- HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) β Choose doctors within the plan’s network; typically requires referrals to see specialists. Usually the lowest cost.
- PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) β More flexibility to see doctors outside the network at a higher cost. No referrals needed.
- PFFS (Private Fee-for-Service) β Can see any Medicare-approved provider who accepts the plan’s terms.
